review 1: This book is so beautiful. I can't say that enough. It's so tragically beautiful and gives so much insight on teenage years and "living for the moment" vs. "working for the future." Sutter and Aimee offer so much to this book and watching the two of them grow together is both saddening and beautiful. I didn't expect to, but I was always rooting for Sutter to make the right choice at every challenge he was faced with. He's just one of those protagonists you can't dislike and I think that's important because that's pretty much how everyone else sees him in the book. Overall, it's a book that deserves so much more credit and love. I will recommend this book to everyone I know.
review 2: This book is just not what you expect. No happy endings here. Sutter is an abs
... moreurd character but still portrays teenagers with his varying outtakes on situations. Everything in the book just happens, there's really no other way to say it. The alcohol, sex, relationships, etc. all happen with not much thought or second guessing. The ending is just a straight punch in the face. The saddest part about Sutter isn't even just the fact that he is left with no hope when it's given to him so many times, it's just the fact that how accurately it portrays people today. This character truly thinks he has himself totally figured out, and in most books characters have a loss of this knowledge and have to find themselves all over again. Sutter however thinks he has himself all figured out, meets someone that may totally change all the hope he may have lost, and then goes back to his old self, thinking he understands the world. He does change however and I'm not sure how I feel about this ending still. The ending is unexpected and very unfortunate but brutally honest. However all this bad does not equal a bad book. It's probably the realist book I've ever read and lays it out straight. In some ways, Sutter reminds me of Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye. The Spectacular Now is a wonderful book with a whole new side of truth that the author brutally portrays through Sutter's character. A spectacular ending? Not so much. A truth only a handful of people can understand these days? Yes completely. less
